Mallorca – 7th – 14th June 2011

For list of birds seen on this trip click here

A family trip with no serious birdwatching. Nonetheless, birding was done as part of trips out and about on the island. We were based in the north east of the island at Alcudia, staying on an all inclusive basis at Club Pollensa. It is a place I have stayed previously and can recommend it for its location and facilities.

Weather was reasonable but cool on arrival. Warmed up during the week but intermittent cloud all days and some ran / thunderstorms at times.

One of the former target birds for a trip to Mallorca, Audouin’s Gull, can easily be encountered on the beach either immediately outside the Club Pollensa or further along the beach at Porto Pollensa. Similarly, Purple Gallinule, Crested Coot and Marbled Duck are all straightforward to see at Albufera now. It was also delightful to see the Eleonora’s Falcons from the grounds of the Club Pollensa, each evening at dusk, gathering to feed on dragonflies over the Albufereta reserve which backs onto Club Pollensa.
