This was a tip to do some bird ringing at the A Rocha reserve in the Algarve.


Thursday 24th October 1996


Flight from Gatwick to Faro in Portugal, and A Rocha. Dry, warm. Only cloud then sunny.


Birds: -


Booted Eagle (one pale phase bird from the road near A Rocha), White Stork (one at A Rocha), Stone Curlew (2 A Rocha), Redstart (1), Black Redstart (2), Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Cattle Egret, Stonechat, Common Waxbill


Dragonflies and Damselflies: -


Crocothemis erythraea, Red-Veined Darter.


Butterflies: -


'Tailed' Blue, Clouded Yellow, Swallowtail


Friday 25th October 1996


Ringing at Arocha in Portugal.


Robin, Blackcap, Stonechat, Greenfinch, Serin, Common Waxbill.


Also seen today Red Kite (2), White Stork (9), Peregrine (brief views of one bird flying over A Rocha), Greenshank (4), Wheatear (1), Serin (3), Stone Curlew (9), Great Grey Shrike (1), Common Waxbill (1), Cattle Egret (20 plus), Little Egret

Saturday 26th October, 1996


Clear blue skies. 80 degrees plus. To Pointe de ... near Lagos.


Birds: -


Little Egret, Gannet (20 plus), Cormorant, Cory's Shearwater (1), Black Redstart (1), Little Owl, Serin, White Stork (2 Lagos, on a nest), Stonechat, Grey Wagtail, Spotless Starling (six plus Pointe de ... Lagos)


Sunday 27th October, 1996


To Castro Verde, then Mertola. dry, hot. Clear blue sky all day. 28 degrees centigrade.


Great Bustard (New Species . 17 in the morning at 07 30, 18 in the afternoon at 1630. Seen off N123, east of Castro Verde, where the road goes south to Rolao. Drive 300-500 yards down the road, approximately between posts 14 and 18 on the left. Seen in ploughed field on the left of the road, going south), Bonelli's Eagle (New Species. Excellent views of one adult about 350 ft up, just west of Mertola. Dark tip to the tail (long), and contrast of underwing very apparent), Hen Harrier (one male over the field of Great Bustards, at 07 30), Merlin (one seen harrying the Harrier), Kestrel (two-to-three), Booted Eagle (one adult pale phase, north of Tunes, on E1, at 5:30pm), Egyptian Vulture (one juvenile north of Tunes, with the Booted Eagle), Snipe (1), Green Sandpiper (2), White Stork (3), Short-toed Lark (one calling in feels with Skylark at Bustard site), Raven (2), Woodlark (two-to-three), Skylark (many hundreds), Corn Bunting, Great Spotted Woodpecker (1), Great Grey Shrike (10 plus)


Monday 28th October, 1996


Ringing at Arocha in Portugal, then to Quinto do Lagos near Faro in the afternoon, from 230 till 7pm.


Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Robin, Chaffinch, Goldfinch, Serin.

To Cape St Vincent, the beach north of here, then the Marsh east of Sagres (Boca de Rio). Warm. Breezy (south-westerly) with scattered clouds.

Ringing at A Rocha in the morning, then Quinto do Lagos in the afternoon. Clear, sunny and very warm all day (again!).

Early leave A Rocha, to Villamoura at dawn for one hour's birding then on to Faro for the flight home, departing 10am local time.
