Sunday 9th March 1986


Family holiday to Tunisia. Hammamet. Cloudy, showery, cool. Slight easterly breeze off the sea.


Spanish Sparrow (1-3 in hotel grounds), House Sparrow (2 in hotel grounds), Cormorant (one from the hotel grounds), Cory's Shearwater (New Species. One. Very sandy/grey above. White underwing bordered by grey/brown margin. Flight very much like a Fulmar. Seen 300 yards offshore from the hotel room. Totally different to Manx Shearwater and no capped effect), Blackbird (one male hotel grounds), Sardinian Warbler (one male hotel grounds), Robin (one hotel grounds), Greenfinch (several calling in hotel grounds), Linnet, Serin (1-2 singing, not seen, hotel grounds) Black-headed Gull (two-to-three up and down the coast from the hotel), Herring Gull (two-to-three on the sea up and down the coast from the hotel), Lesser Black-backed Gull (1 on the sea from a hotel), Swallow (? Species, one from the hotel)


Monday 10th March, 1986


Hammamet. Cloudy. Showery, cool. A breeze off the sea.


Spanish Sparrow, Blackbird (two males), Blue Tit (one in hotel grounds), Serin (several males singing), Greenfinch, Chaffinch (two-to-three males - blue/grey head and black above the bill), Spotless Starling (New Species. 4-5 birds seen closely around the hotel and Hammamet), Palm Dove (New Species. Six to eight around Hammamet), White Wagtail (one Hammamet), Hoopoe (1 Hammamet), Black-headed Gull, Cormorant (one offshore), Sardinian Warbler, Chiffchaff (1 singing, Hammamet), Alpine Swift (three outside the Hotel), Goldfinch (2 at the hotel), Wryneck (one in hotel grounds), Robin (one at the hotel), Mediterranean Gull (one second summer bird, on the beach at the hotel), House Martin (several passing south down the coast), Herring Gull (2 offshore from the hotel)


Tuesday 11th March, 1986


Hammamet. Clear. Warm, sunny. No wind.


Spanish Sparrow, Greenfinch (2 at the hotel grounds), Herring Gull (two-to-three on the sea offshore), Sardinian Warbler (3-4 singing males in hotel grounds), Serin (two males in hotel grounds), Goldfinch (one and the hotel grounds), Shearwater (? Species. Long way offshore), Robin (one in hotel grounds), Black-headed Gull (3-4 Hammamet), Palm Dove (four plus around the hotel), Blackbird (3 in hotel grounds), Blue Tit (one in hotel grounds), [Common Crane / Demoiselle Crane - 8 birds over the hotel flying north, unidentified with certainty], Swallow (one in hotel grounds), Stonechat (one male in hotel grounds), [Phylloscopus Warbler - two-to-three about Hammamet - not heard to call. Very green/yellow.? Willow Warbler], Hoopoe (3 in hotel grounds)

Five Halk el Menzel), Shelduck (three Halk el Menzel), Shoveler (two males Halk el Menzel), Mallard, Teal (seven Halk el Menzel), Pochard (10 Halk el Menzel), Long-legged Buzzard (one Sidi Bou Ali), Marsh Harrier (two Sidi Bou Ali), Common Crane (New Species. Cap Bon, Lac de Tunis.


Black-necked Grebe (100-200 plus Lac de Tunis), Cory's Shearwater (10-15 Cap Bon), Cormorant (20 plus Lac de Tunis), Grey Heron (one Lac de Tunis), Little Egret (one Lac de Tunis), Greater Flamingo (100 plus Lac de Tunis), Shelduck (one Lac de Tunis), Wigeon (10 Lac de Tunis), Shoveler (20 Lac de Tunis), Common Crane (60-80 in the distance, flying north of Cap Bon), Coot (100 Lac de Tunis), Ruff (60-100 Lac de Tunis), Black-headed Gull, Slender-billed Gull (60 Lac de Tunis), Palm Dove, Little Owl (one Cap Bon), Hoopoe, Crested Lark, Swallow, Pied Wagtail, Great Grey Shrike (many), Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler (one male Cap Bon), Stonechat (many), Moussier's Redstart (New Species. Grey Heron, Little Egret, Greater Flamingo, Spotted Redshank, Blackcap (one Thyna), Shoveler, Barbary Partridge (New Species. To crossing the road near Meknassy), Coot, Avocet, Black-winged Stilt (Halk El Menzel), Curlew, Palm Dove, Lesser Short-toed Lark (New Species. One in a mixed flock of Crested Lark/Thekla Lark near Bir el Hafey), Crested Lark, Swallow, Pied Wagtail, Great Grey Shrike, Wheatear, Corn Bunting, Goldfinch, Serin, Greenfinch, Linnet, Spanish Parrot, Spotless Starling


Saturday 15th March, 1986


Hammamet to Lake Ichkeul, Lac de Tunis, Hammamet. Weather - awful! Very heavy rain.


Black-necked Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Cattle Egret (8 near Mateur), Greater Flamingo (200 Lac de Tunis), Mallard, Wigeon, Shoveler, Pintail, Marsh Harrier (4-8 Lake Ichkeul), Coot, Avocet, Grey Plover (one Lake Ichkeul), Snipe (2 Lake Ichkeul), Slender-billed Gull (5-10 Late Ichkeul, 30 Lac de Tunis), Black-headed Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Herring Gull, Whiskered Tern (One fishing Lac de Tunis), Palm Dove, Swift, Crested Lark, Calandra Lark (30 in flocks, Lake Ichkeul), Swallow, Sand Martin (one Menzel Bourgiba), Pied Wagtail, Cetti's Warbler (one heard in song, Lake Ichkeul), Robin, Corn Bunting, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, Spanish Sparrow, Spotless Starling

Hammamet to Zaghouan, Roman aqueduct and then return to Hammamet.


Cory's Shearwater (40 plus flying author Hammamet), Gannet (one second summer bird flying north, Hammamet), Palm Dove, Hoopoe, Crested Lark, Swallow, Pied Wagtail, Sardinian Warbler, Stonechat, Moussier's Redstart (one male, one female Zaghouan), Robin, Blackbird, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Linnet, Serin, Spotless Starling, Raven (? Species), Spanish Sparrow, Black Redstart (one male Zaghouan)


Monday 17th March 1986


Halk El Menzel and lagoon, Oussettia, Makhtar / Haffouz, Kariouan, Hammamet.


Black-necked Grebe, Little Grebe, Shoveler (10 Halk El Menzel), Mallard, Greater Flamingo (1000 to 2000 near Bonficha on the side of the road), Egyptian Vulture (one adult near Kairouan), Lanner Falcon (New Species. One on the road to Haffouz - Oussettia. Flying close by the road. Size - as per Peregrine. Generally brown upperparts. Crown not seen to be paler or darker than the rest of that body. Paler underparts), Barbary Partridge (2 in a field on way to Kairouan), Coot (Halk El Menzel), Avocet (30 Halk El Menzel), Little Ringed Plover (two-to-three Halk El Menzel), Kentish Plover, Dunlin (wanted to Halk El Menzel), Little Stint (10-20 Halk El Menzel), Knot (3 Halk El Menzel, winter plumage), Sanderling (two-to-three Halk El Menzel), Spotted Redshank (one calling, Halk El Menzel), Greenshank (one calling, Halk El Menzel), Curlew (one heart Gull Menzel), Black-headed Gull (15 Halk El Menzel), Herring Gull, Sandwich Tern (nine Halk el Menzel), Palm Dove, Little Owl (1 on a telegraph wire near Kairouan), Alpine Swift (2 Haffouz area), Swift (one Haffouz), Hoopoe, Crested Lark, Swallow, Pied Wagtail, Great Grey Shrike, Sardinian Warbler, Stonechat, Blue Rock Thrush (one male singing on rocks between Haffouz and Makhtar), Black Wheatear (New Species.
